Now that we’ve got the minor holidays out of the way, it’s Carnival Time. As usual, I feel a pang of sadness for folks who live elsewhere and are looking forward to “February.” Just a little pang, and then I quickly move on to thinking about costumes.
Krewe du Vieux’s parade is February 7, 2009. Our theme is “KdV’s Stimulus Package.” Imagine the possibilities for some of our more phallic sub-krewes. The mind reels. I’ve heard a few - Spermes is saluting “Trickle Down Economics,” and LEWD is doing “Inaugural Balls,” for examples. Fun for the whole family, if you bring a blindfold for the kids.
The King of Krewe du Vieux this year is the immortal Frankie Ford. I don’t think the parade route is set yet, but I am told it will change from last year. Be sure to look it up. I’ll post a link here when it’s up.
My group, Mama Roux, has opted for a more wholesome theme - “Mama Roux Invests in Stocks and Bondage.” We have the Bondage angle tied down, but we are still working on the Stocks. Our Queen is Ina Davis, and she has promised “Chains You Can Believe In.” Our King, Rick Davis, has announced, “In these troubling times of stocks and bondages, when many find themselves strapped, we say suck it up! You will be bound to like it!”
As I am on the Kink Committee, I did some research into bondage - and not just those documentary movies you can find on the internet. I actually dragged Sophmom into Second Skin, a bondage shop in the Quarter on St. Philip. Once I got her in there, I had to drag her back out. Dawlin’ I never saw so much leather in my whole life, it was like Wild Kingdom in there.
At Mama Roux’s pot luck dinner this weekend, I ran into Karen Gadbois, one of the New Orleanians of the Year. Let me just say that you will see a different side of Ms. Gadbois on February 7.
