enjoying every sandwich April 4, 2008
I was very moved by the nice tribute to Ashley Morris that City Councilwoman Shelley Midura delivered at the council meeting yesterday. It will be broadcast numerous times on the City Council channel, and Humid Haney has reproduced it in full on his blog. It is gratifying to see how many devoted friends Ashley had and how well thought of he was. It’s a shame, for many reasons, that his children are so young, but particularly because they can’t comprehend the high esteem in which their father was held. It’s important that these tributes be preserved and saved for them for a time when they can understand what is being said and written about Ashley. There has been an amazing response from bloggers here and all over. CenLamar has a nice catalogue of the tributes.
Ashley was also an evangelist for the HBO show The Wire. I had not seen the first season, so Ashley brought the DVDs over to my house. (He actually included the movie “Orgasmo,” which he insisted I would like. I lasted about 15 minutes with that one. I guess I’ll never know what made Ashley think I would like that movie.) But I did love The Wire, and I’ve seen all but the last season. Ashley started writing this year for a blog about The Wire, Got That New Package, along with RacyMind, Ray, Athenae and Scout, Nancy Nall, and Virgotext. The Wire’s creator, David Simon, left a comment about Ashley there.
I attended a Captain’s meeting in Vivian’s place for KdV, and the captain of PAN, John Kelly, gave a very moving talk about Ashley to the group. Suspect Device made a very sweet video of Ashley and his kids, but get out your hankies.
