as god is my witness, the tide shall rise again! July 11, 2007
I went to a meeting at Buffa’s tonight for the Rising Tide II, which will be held on August 25-26, 2007. This is the weekend before the anniversary. Maitri has set up a Wiki where you can find the minutes of the meetings if you couldn’t attend. Please read them and see if there is any way you can contribute to the concepts that are forming right now. Maitri will have more minutes up soon.
We know that we want to have a social event on Friday night where we can informally screen some of the great video that has been created here in the last two years. It’s important for the conference attendees to see visual reminders of what happened, many of the sites themselves are changed. It’s important also for them to see the creative punctuation that technology and the arts are undergoing here. Necessity is the mother of invention, and in New Orleans her children are everywhere.
If you have missed the Rising Tide meetings, you should really consider coming back to the fold. Tonight, for instance, Ashley Morris had “da’ mayor in my pocket.” Every discussion was punctuated with, “but I am PISSED,” or “ladies and gentlemen, excuse my French,” or “let’s fix the biggest goddamned disaster in this country’s history.”
We discussed themes, last year it was “we are not OK.” So, now it’s two years out and we thought of “are you OK yet?” I suggested “Have you gone crazy yet?” Maitri has the official notes of the suggested speakers and sessions. I know that I am going to be involved in putting together a panel discussion of politics and corruption, where there will be time for questions from the audience. Names are being talked about and I am interested in readers sending me names of people who can speak about integrity and what it means to be in public service, how much effort it will need to root out the entrenched corruption that slows every single thing down and makes everything less efficient. I’m looking for respected people who are not pushing a personal or political agenda, preferably not running for office currently. Who are these people? Who are the wise men and women who can explain what public service is, and then contrast it to what we actually have here, and then give people some tips on how to get together enough voters to root out scoundrels and put in public servants. Any way, point is, I’m open to suggestions.
There is much more to be learned at the Wiki, and we will soon have our website all fixed up with the Registration Form. I’m the person to contact about everything at the moment, I can forward your e-mail or call to the right person. E-mail me also about help with a place to crash for the weekend. There should be some pretty good hotel deals that weekend, too.
If you want to add suggestions or volunteer your help for the conference, you can easily post that on the Wiki. Everyone should start checking the Wiki for updates, they will be coming fast and furious.
