NOPD: knock it off July 23, 2007
The people who work at the NOPD need a serious attitude adjustment. At work, we have been waiting since March for a police report in a particular car accident. We have a service that gets the reports for us. They have been telling me that the report is “not yet in the system.” I have the item number and the officer’s name, so I called the 4th District to see what is going on. A woman answered the phone and tried to cut me off by saying, “you need to call the records department.”
“Well, they say it’s ‘not in the system yet,’ so that’s why I’m calling you. I have the item number and the officer’s name.”
Dead silence.
“Hello?”
“I’m waiting for you to stop talking so that I can talk.”
“Oh. Well, I’m finished.”
“You have to call the records department.”
“Well, they say it’s ‘not in the system yet,’ so that’s why I’m calling you. I have the item number and the officer’s name.”
Exasperated sigh. “OK, what’s the item number?”
I gave it to her.
“And that’s a what?”
“A signal 20.”
“Hold on.”
She clicked off for a long time and then came back on.
“Who told you it wasn’t in the system?”
“I don’t know the name, I just need to know if you have it so I can get a copy.”
“YES I have it.”
She insisted that it was “in the system” and she had to call over there and dress someone down.
“OK, well, if there was some kind of mistake, I really don’t care, I just need a copy of the report.”
“Well, you call over there five minutes from now and you’ll get it.”
OK. I will keep trying until I get what I want. But wouldn’t it be nice if my employees over at the NOPD didn’t have such a chip on their shoulder? NOPD is not going to increase its level of popularity by acting like jerks on the phone. What part of “to serve the public” is so hard to understand?
